Hey everyone

Last time I posted, I promised I’d make it up to everyone for posting late by singing a song.

Did you think I was joking?

Once upon a time…

While juggling my real life and working on episode 2 of AOTI, I’ve been enjoying my spare moments playing with my (relatively) new ukulele that my closest friend got me for my birthday. She used to tease me that since I was never very musically inclined, I’d be best off buying a ukulele since they’re the easiest string instrument to pick up.

Then she goes and buys me one, and believe me you I freaked the heck out.

Like, seriously. It’s a ukulele…. SHAPED LIKE A PINEAPPLE.

I feel like I could just bring it around anywhere and whenever I disagreed with someone I could just hold it up and go:

“I have a ukulele shaped like a pineapple. Your argument is invalid.”

Anyway, long story short, I have this thing now that whenever I’m:

  • waiting for food to microwave
  • waiting for something to finish downloading or buffering
  • waiting for something to download or finish buffering AND food to microwave– I’ll play the ukulele a bit.

Considering I’ve had the thing since October, I’ve already learned a bunch of songs, but the my first and biggest hurdle was to learn Jason Mraz – “I’m Yours.” That song was an instant classic (like to Wonderwall, minus the annoying vocals) and a hit at any party (like Wonderwal, minus the annoying vocals).

Anyone else who plays a string instrument find it super hard to sing and play at the same time? That was easily the hardest freaking part of the experience for me. Once I finally got it, I was super excited to show off to Melly and Mark (you’ll hear about them often.)

The funny part was that once I started playing the first few chords, Mark jumped in by singing  “Hey Soul Sister” by Train:

“Hey, hey…. hey hey hey, hey hey….”

I was like, HELLLLL NOOOOO.

But here’s the weird thing….

Once I got my fingering down,  I tried to learn “Hey Soul Sister.” and surprise-surprise, the chords are almost identical. In fact, I found that you could easily slip back and forth between the two songs without skipping a beat.

So that brings me to this video, where I sat in front of my crummy web cam, and decided to perform for the first time a mash-up cover on the ukulele for “I’m Yours” vs. “Hey Soul Sister.”

Mraz vs. Train. Who will win?

PS. I apologize for my awful vocals in advance. Unless you do everything chronologically, meaning you’ve watched this video already and are only now reading this comment. At which point I just apologize for my awful vocals. I get most of my singing practice ludicrously drunk at karaoke bars in Korea town… and that’s not nearly often enough as it should be.

You are… my fire…
